benedict asked eded pilgrims to pray for the next pope. he will eventually live inside vatican city. that will allow him to keep out of the public eye and ensure his personal security. because the vatican is sovereign territory it will make it impossible for the lawyers to try to sue him for the sex abuse scandals which some have tried do. when a pope dies they put things under seal but he plans to keep writing. issues on what to call the pope will be bush of emeritus of rome for which he'll receive just over $3,000 a month. there's still no firm decision whether church law can be altered to choose a pope 15 days after benedict leaves office. prior to the conclave the cardinals speak their minds and get to know each other. a crucial inltd rim according to senior adviser greg burke. >> some of the advisers are known. a lot are not. it's interesting. they get together a few times a year, but it's not like they all know each other well. >> reporter: the last time he saw the pope he was hard of hearing, thin, and partially blind in one eye. >> we're joined now from vat

is pouring in from around the world and we begin our coverage with alan pizzey in vatican city. >> reporter: good morning. the announcement took a lot of people by surprise yet it is said the pope had discussed this two weeks ago with two or three people who are very close to him. the pope said he made this decision after long and careful consideration and prayer and thought. in his statement announcing it he said, i have come to the certainty that my strptength, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to the adequate exercise of the petrine ministry meaning he's too tired to go on. the papal spokesman said there was no specific illness that they know of he's not in danger of dying tomorrow or anything but he's just decided it was time to go. he will resign at 8:00 p.m. rome time on february the 28th. afterwards, there will be a conclave of cardinals. they will try to have a new pope elected by march the 24th, which is the beginning of holy week. it's not necessary for them to do it, but the feeling here is that they will probably be able to do that. benedict xvi in

to move into kansas city where it's going to snow hard it looks like for about the entire day. our forecast models are showing that snow pivoting from the southwest to the northeast as we go throughout the morning and the afternoon hours, so wichita will see improvements late today, but northeast kansas and most of missouri we're going to be looking at heavy snowfall for the next at least 12 hours and how much more snow? look at this purple area anywhere in here we could be talking about maybe a foot maybe a little bit more than that. the snow rates are incredible this morning they're one to two inches per hour and it could snow like that for the next 6 to 12 hours in some locations. we don't want to forget about folks in the south from houston to new orleans the southern end of this storm, there's the potential for severe weather as we head later on into today. so it's bad news in the short term for travel but the good news is we have severe drought in the farmland areas of the midwest and this moisture is greatly needed and going to be greatly appreciated.
